I need and iPhone! I make beats on my laptop. I use to think "Damn! How cool is it that I can pack up my whole studio in a bag and take it on the road with me." Forget the bag, now you can pack it in you pocket. Apps for the iPhone are being created at a ridiculous rate. If I had the money this one would be the selling point for me. In these videos the guys at Simple Sample take you through a tour of some of the beat making features of the Beat Maker software and Alesis ProTrack audio hardware for the iPhone.

Once I get done learning the billion other things I have on my plate to master, I want to take on the art of making video games. I've been inspired.

Blender 3D is probably the most impressive open source application I know of. It can create stunning 3D animations and when put in to the hands of dudes like pygmies, it can build pretty impressive looking video games using it's new game engine.

I can't wait for a playable version of this game to come out. Sometimes it great to have a game with a simple concept. Thump Stuff's title pretty much sums up the concept of this game. There are some days I'd love to just club the shit out of everything I see. That's a horrible idea though and would probably deem me to be a threat to society if it was ever carried out. This game looks to be a much better solutions to take your frustrations out on.

Keep in mind that these are a look at the work in progress. Imagine what it will look like when it's finished for real.

Hamilton Clineh likes to draw. It even say so on his website. Although I don't think it would really take a cleaver url to figure that out. You could come to that conclusion just by checking out all of the fantastic illustrations that he's posed up. There's a wide variety of styles to choose from, all grouped into different collections. Dare, Does, Toast, Nash all collaborated in this effort. What I like most about this crew piece is the teamwork. Especially the way their styles are blended together almost seamlessly. Most crew pieces have some type of theme that ties them together, maybe a colour scheme, or set of characters from a popular movie, but usually all the tags are there own separate works. I love how they've tied all their tags together to form like Voltron.

This clip of Exile (of Blu & Exile) rocking his MPC has my jaw sitting on the floor. The MPC is so instilled in hip hop culture as the industry standard weapon of choice for producers. That said it's not taken out of the studio all that often. Not a lot of big name producers ever show their process, chopping beats together and getting the sequence to bang right. Almost like it's a secret art form that they keep under lock and key like the recipe for KFC's 11 herbs and spices. The ones that do let you in on their creative process often only show brief glimpses of the meticulous steps taken to bang out a head nodder. Usually with every element in the beat sequenced one step at a time. So it's really inspiring to see a dude like Exile taking the machine out of the studio and using it to pull of well crafted routines in live performances.

This is my first post on web design. Websites are getting a little crazier and crazier as every year goes by. Sometimes it's for better, sometimes not so much. This design by Fluid and SS+K really caught my attention though. It's called Spectra and was made for MSNBC's website. I think it does a good job of creating an interactive experience for the viewer. It's a well put together alternative to traditional web page navigation.

Try it out. I think it's kind of fun but I'd love to hear what other people's thought are on it. Feel free to leave a comment with your opinion.

The classic image of a pixelated alien nemesis is being plastered up on walls, bridges, signs and basically any urban canvas you can think of. This is all the work of one brilliant CG artist. When I say all the work, I mean right down to the sound scape that accompanies the short film. Alex Roman's name is the only one you will see in the credits. He has created an amazing piece of art here that i will probably study over the next year or so still puzzled as to how one man pulled this off.

The first time I watched "The Third & The Seventh" I said to myself, "Self, I'm amazed at how well he's composited the CG footage into the shots of this building." Then I researched the project a little more to find out that even the buildings are CG. In fact everything but the photographer, slow-motion birds, airplane, sky backgrounds and some time lapsed plants are CG. Everything in this little world he has created is virtually his own creation. To prove this to the skeptics I've included the making of footage and a breakdown of the render passes.

CANADA STAND UP!
Big ups to Classified for being a marketing genius. With the 2010 Olympics opening up this February 12th, what better time to launch a track about nation pride. A remixed Canadian anthem as a matter of fact. The track is ill and as a Canadian listening to it I can't help but feel a little Cauuck pride.
Just to give an idea as to how effective it's been timing this track with the Olympics, the video has gone viral and I have co-workers who could careless about hip hop posting links to it on there facebook pages.

Paul Dateh and inka one killin it on the violin and the 1's and 2's. Any true hip hop head will vibe out to this. Hell even if you like county you should still appreciate the talent. These guys are the kind of act that I'd love to see playing live at a bar. The classic hip hop covers with a new twist of strings are a sure fire way to keep them heads nodding.

Ian Hubert has got my attention, after watching these clips I'm sure he'll have yours too. I get really inspired when I see people thinking big and trying to pull off the nearly impossible. I heard a James Cameron quote this year through twitter that I've been trying to live by. It goes like this. "If you set your goals ridiculously high and it’s a failure, you will fail above everyone else’s success." I think Ian's brain child "Project London" is following this example. Except unlike James Cameron's latest master piece Avitar, with a 500 million dollar budget, Ian's working with a budget of next to nothing.

Rome wasn't built in a day. However, if you're Stephen Wiltshire you can draw it in 3. Stephen has a photographic memory. The amount of visual detail he retains just from looking at something is astonishing. Apparently his first words where even paper and pencil. What a gift he has. In this video he's drawing the entire city of Rome from memory after only a 45 minute helicopter tour of the city.

He's done other major cities as well, including New York and Tokyo.

I thought this was a really cool gallery when I found it. All of the images have been created using fractal patterns. I'm intrigued by fractals although I've not done enough research myself to fully understand them. They appear everywhere in nature and if you start looking for them, you'll notice them anywhere you look. It blows my mind though to think that this image was created with math.

If you've never made a beat, or dug through crates of records trying to find that perfect sample you may not fully get this. I think this video from Vinroc really captures the whole process and that perfect moment where it all comes together. There some thing really special about taking something old and putting your own new twist on it. So even if you never do make a beat in your life, watching this is the next best thing.

These youngstaz are killin' it! I've seen some kids up on the decks, including my own, but I've never seen a kid scratching at this level so young. Hell they're doing some scratches I can't even pull off and making me feel like I should go practice. Sarah Scratch is only 9 and Ryusei is all of 7 years old at the time this video was done.

I've been told I have a big head before. My wife tells it to me often, but I don't think this is what she had in mind. The credit actually goes to her for finding this link from Eric Testroete.

Eric put this project together as a Halloween costume. Seriously cool stuff. This one comes curtsy of Teis Alber. I'm a big fan of DJ style head phones but the one's I rock don't look half as cool as these. Not sure how good they'd sound as the cord seems to be suffering some type of flesh wound, but who cares when they look this good right? Actually I had a friend in high school who I caught walking around with a set of cool head phones on. When I asked him what he was listening to he pulled the cord out of his pocket without a player of any kind attached to it. True story.

Yo, I think this one is my favorite one yet! I'm moved by this on so many levels I can't even explain it, but I'll do my best. I found this yesterday and was blown away. I love graffiti and still stay involved in the art form, I love open source software and the new directions I see it take everyday and I love the freedom to express one's self creatively. This story combines all of these things together.

A collaborative effort from the people at Free Art and Technology (FAT), OpenFrameworks, the Graffiti Research Lab, The Ebeling Group,the Not Impossible Foundation and Parsons Communication Design & Technology have come up with open source software that can be used in combination with some low budget DIY hardware, that allows people to draw with only the use of their eyes.

These guys teamed up with Tony Quan, a graffiti writer from L.A. who goes by TEMPTONE. TEMPT was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in '03. The disease took away nearly all of his mobility except for the movement of his eyes. With the use of this new technology TEMP is able to continue doing the art work he loves.

Watch this and tell me you don't feel uplifted.

Serene Teh & Noel Lee had me flipping out when I watched this! Bad puns aside these two did a killer job pulling off some very original stuff. At some point I'm going to watch this thing frame by frame because the hands are definitely moving quicker then my eyes. I remember making some stick man flip book animations years back but these guys take the concept to a whole new level.

This is one of the best stop motion animations I’ve ever seen. It’s called The Pen Story. 9,600 prints over 3 minutes telling a story that spans decades. The pre-production on this would have taken some serious planning to pull off this masterpiece. What I think I like most about this one is that it takes you so many different places in such a short period of time, with a new surprise every few feet traveled.

For the past two years or so I've been getting more and more addicted to the open source movement. The whole concept of a community donating their time to building software, in a collaborative effort, to give that software to the world freely just appeals to the inner hippie in me.

What really got me hooked into these ideals was when I saw it's full potential unleashed in the short film Big Buck Bunny. The short animated film was produced by the Blender Foundation, released in 2008 and is truly an impressive accomplishment. All the software used to make the movie was open source (majority of the work being done in Blender 3D). The movie itself is creative commons and pretty much all the elements, textures and characters are all open source and available for download so that you can use them to learn from them.

Day two of this Creative Inspire series. Today's inspiration comes from Kelly Burfield. I'll admit I'm a little bias on this one as the piece is actually test footage shot on a Canon HV30 and I own a HV20. That said, I'm constantly amazed at the quality of footage that people are putting out on a simple $600 Camera. I think this is a good example of what can be achieved with good lighting and a little colour grading. Way to go Kelly, you made me want to get my camera out more often.

Welcome to 2010! 2009 was great for me and I've got high hopes for this year as well. Just about a week before '09 came to a close I had an idea to blog out a daily link of something that inspired me to be creative. I spend a lot of time on the net and I'm constantly finding inspiration around every corner I turn in the real world. I thought it might be nice to share some of the treasures I come across, in hope's that it might inspire you to do something creative as well.

The links can range from animation, music, photography, design, illustration, film, a cool quote, a demo reel... really this could go on forever. Basically if I found inspiration in it to be creative, it's eligible.

I'll do my best to have these out daily and as early as I can get them out, but cut me some slack if I miss a day or two here and there because I'm busy. It's all good and it's all for the fun of it.

I thought it would only be right to have the first piece be the one that actually was the inspiration to start this project. This one comes curtsy of Strukt Design Studios in Austria. When I found this it made me want to go out and buy a video projector. Digital wallpaper is such an ill concept and I can't wait to see how far people take the idea in the future.
